Schreiner University is a private "liberal arts" institution located in Kerrville, Texas. The University enrolls an estimated 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It offers four-year undergraduate programs and a master of education. Its religious affiliation is to the Presbyterian Church. Established in 1923, it has been coeducational since 1932. As of the fall 2006, Schreiner had a student/faculty ratio of 13:1.

History

Captain Charles Schreiner founded Schreiner Institute in 1917 and worked toward its establishment until 1923. The military institute was created for young boys and included both secondary school and Junior College curriculum to prepare the students for further education. The year of 1971 marked the end of the military training used by the Institute. In 1973, it began using only college curriculum and changed its name to Schreiner College. The college experience changed again in 1982 when it became a four-year college. Not until 2001 did the college become Schreiner University and begin offering master's degrees.

Accreditation

Schreiner University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award masters, baccalaureate and associate degrees.

The University also holds accreditation by the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners and is approved by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) for teacher certification programs.

The University holds membership in the American Association for Higher Education, The American Council on Education, the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas.

Despite officially being a "liberal arts" university, less of the university's focus is on the liberal arts, specifically the theatre and arts programs, which receive comparatively minor attention and funding.

Athletics

The Schreiner University Women's Basketball Team holds the record for the most consecutive losses by any NCAA basketball program. The streak was finally broken with a 75-69 victory over Sul Ross State University [http://www.d3hoops.com/releases.php?release=38277] on January 17, 2005. Prior to that victory the team had experienced 83 consecutive losses. Stacey Patsko was the head coach for the majority of the losses and Leigh Anne Owens was the coach who eventually ended the streak.

Greek life

On February 21, 2001 Greek life was established when Chi Phi Fraternity founded a colony at Schreiner University. In 2005 the colony was chartered into the Iota Theta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity. The fraternity grew from 5 to over 20 active members in just 3 semesters. Joining the only fraternity on campus at the time, the sorority Delta Phi Epsilon established its Gamma Gamma chapter on January 25, 2003. On May 2 of the same year, Phi Delta Theta established its Texas Sigma chapter, and became the second fraternity on campus, but the first Fraternity to be officially chartered with 26 founding fathers. On March 25, 2006 Theta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was installed, becoming the second sorority on campus.
