Mirsad Türkcan (in Serbian: Мирсад Туркџан, Mirsad Turkdžan) (born June 7, 1976) is a basketball player who represents Turkey in international competition. At 2.06 m (6'9") in height, Türkcan plays the power forward position.

Born Mirsad Jahović (Мирсад Јаховић) in Novi Pazar, SR Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia, he changed his family name to Türkcan when he moved to play basketball in Turkey. At the same time, he also obtained Turkish citizenship and started playing international basketball for Turkey.

Türkcan played in 2004–2005 for the Russian team Dynamo Moscow. In summer 2006, he signed a contract with the Turkish club Fenerbahçe Ülker. He is the all time best rebounder of the Euroleague.[1]

Personal life

On December 18, 2005, Mirsad married 18-year-old Dina Džanković, his girlfriend of five months and 2005 Miss Serbia and Montenegro.[2] They have three children together; two girls, Naba and Karia, and a boy, Nusret.[3]

His sister Emina Jahović (known as Emina Türkcan in Turkey) is a famous pop singer in former Yugoslavia and wife of a famous Turkish singer Mustafa Sandal. Türkcan is known to have financially helped jump start her recording career.

He is a fan of Fenerbahçe. He became, in 1999, the first Turkish basketball player to play in the NBA. He is also the first basketball player to pull down 1000 rebounds in Euroleague history.[4]

NBA career

Selected by the Houston Rockets in the 1998 NBA Draft, his rights were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in January 1999 and the New York Knicks in March, with whom he eventually signed and debuted in 1999-00 (7 games). Waived on February 2000, he finished his NBA adventure playing 10 games for the Milwaukee Bucks.
