Annandale High School is a high school in Annandale in Fairfax County, Virginia. This school is one of the oldest schools in the area, founded in 1954 and still on its original campus. Annandale was built to relieve congestion and overcrowding from Mount Vernon and Fairfax High School.

chool summary

There are eight active honor societies, as well as numerous academically oriented clubs. The school offers a range of athletic opportunities for males and females, and athletic achievements include numerous state championships and Coach of the Year awards. Annandale High also allows students to partake in the arts; its band has been recognized as a Virginia Honor Band, with a orchestra and choral program which have earned the music department Blue Ribbon status from the Virginia State Music Educators Association. Annandale's theater program has trained students to take on lead roles in college productions all over the country. Student art work and photography are on display in museums and public buildings throughout the area.

The school is supported by an active Parent-Student-Teacher Association that fosters parent involvement in the educational process. The school also receives strong support from the community surrounding it, including local businesses and community organizations. Annandale offers a fully staffed college and career center, open to students and parents; houses adult education classes; and encourages community use of its facilities. The class of 2011 is the larget class in AHS history.

Demographics

In 2006-2007, Annandale's student body was 34% Caucasian, 28% Hispanic, 21% Asian, and 17% African American. It consistently ranks as one of the most racially diverse high schools in the country. Additional history

The school was all-white segregated institution when it was founded in 1954, but by the late 90's the proportion of white students was only 44% and there were students from 73 countries, speaking 43 different languages. [cite web|url=http://www.embracediverseschools.com/resources.htm|title=Embrace Diverse Schools: Resources] For this reason, it was visited in 1998 by President Bill Clinton's President’s Advisory Board on Race for round-table discussions [cite web|url=http://www.hoover.org/publications/digest/3531961.html|title=Hoover Digest - Fast Times at Annandale High] . As of 2006, 87 nationalities and 46 languages are represented in the student population. A Gay-straight alliance club is present at Annandale and incidents of intolerance are low. Many groups have strong club activities such as the Latino, West African, and Jewish culture groups.

Football

In 50 years, Annandale has won six football state championships (1965, 1967, 1972, 1978, 1993, and 1994) and numerous district titles as a member of both the Potomac District (Pre-resdistricting) and the Patriot District (Post redistricting). Annandale won Patriot District titles in both 2005 and 2006, but both times the Atoms fell to their first round opponents.
