Trouble in Mind (song)

The song "Trouble in Mind" is a widely recorded eight-bar blues standard.

It was written by Richard M. Jones (1892-1945), composer and jazz pianist. He recorded the song on February 23, 1926 with singer Bertha "Chippie" Hill and Louis Armstrong on cornet.

It has been recorded hundreds of times, including notable performances (by alphabetic order): Mose Allison; Jeff Beck ("Beckology"); Elkie Brooks and Humphrey Lyttelton ("Trouble in Mind", 2003); Big Bill Broonzy; Johnny Cash ("Unearted Vol. 2"); King Curtis ("All That Blues"); Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler (recorded in 1998); Marianne Faithfull for soundtrack of the 1985 Trouble in Mind (film) ; Aretha Franklin; Natalie Gardiner; Peter Green; Big Walter Horton and Carey Bell; Janis Joplin ("Janis", 1975 / 1993); Jerry Lee Lewis and Eric Clapton ("Last Man Standing"); Jerry Lee Lewis and Ron Wood ("Last Man Standing Live"); Night Losers; Jim McShann, Duke Robillard and Maria Muldaur; Nina Simone ("Nina Simone at Newport", 1960); Big Joe Turner, Dinah Washington, Arno Hintjens.

The song's lyrics echo both despair and hope:
