Raffaele Fitto

Raffaele Fitto (born 28 August 1969) is an italian politician, current Minister for Regional Business in Berlusconi IV Cabinet.

Biography

Raffaele Fitto was born in Maglie, near Lecce. His father, Salvatore Fitto, who was an exponent of the Christian Democracy and President of Apulia from 1985, died in 1988.

Fitto became regional councilor in 1990. In 1995, he was re-elected councilor, and he became vice-president of Apulia. In 1999 he was elected at European Parliament.

In 2000 he was elected president of Apulia for the right-wing, with about 1,200,000 votes. Under his presidence, Apulia Region put into effect financial improvement and became the italian region with the minor fiscal pressure.

On April 2005 he was again candidate for Apulia's presidence, but he was defeated by the communist Nichi Vendola, with a difference of just 14,000 votes.

In the same year he became Forza Italia's regional co-ordinator, and in 2006 he was elected parliamentary at the Chamber of Deputies for Forza Italia.

From May 2008 Fitto is Minister for Regional Business in Berlusconi IV Cabinet.
