He served as a Harrow representative on the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) and in turn represented LFEPA on the Local Government Association's Urban Commission.[1]

He was elected as a member of the London Assembly at the 2008 assembly elections, taking the constituency seat of Brent and Harrow, beating Conservative incumbent Bob Blackman mainly thank to the Lib-Dem voters defecting to vote Labour. He continued to serve on LFEPA, now as an Assembly Member, and also sits on the Metropolitan Police Authority, the Audit Panel, the Health and Public Services Committee and the Planning and Spatial Development Committee.[2]

Navin Shah is hoping to stand as the next candidate in Harrow East after Tony McNulty lost his seat in the 2010 General Election.
