Jaime Morales Carazo

Jaime Morales Carazo

Jaime Rene Morales Carazo (b. September 10, 1936, Granada) is Nicaraguan politician currently serving as Vice President.

Morales was banker and organizing educational institutions of economics in Nicaragua before entering politics in 1980. From 1979 to 1990 he lived permanently in Honduras and Mexico in opposition to Sandinista government. He joined Nicaraguan Democratic Force, the Contras, and was one of their negotiators.

In 1993 he was member of Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) and in charge of 1996 campaign in the general election. However, in 2002 he was expelled as dissident from the party.

On May 28, 2006 he accepted the invitation of his past enemy, Daniel Ortega, to be his running mate in the 2006 presidential election. Ortega won the election. The irony behind this partnership lies in that Daniel Ortega confiscated all of Morales' personal belongings when he seized Morales' home and converted it into his private residence upon taking office as President of the Republic of Nicaragua in 1984.
