Universities in Africa

Universities in Africa

Universities in Africa, along with many in the developing world, face problems like fast-growing student numbers and competition from unregulated degree programmes. Overcrowding has forced institutions like Uganda's Makerere University to hold lectures in shifts, with classes held at nights and weekends.

International organizations

* The Association of African Universities, based in Accra, Ghana, promotes cooperation among its members and gathers information relating to high education in the continent.

* The African Virtual University, based at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, was originally a project of the World Bank but has grown to become an independent intergovernmental organization with more than 34 Learning Centers in 19 different countries.

* Euclid University, now an agency of the International Organization for Sustainable Development, was started as the distance learning extension of the University of Bangui (Central African Republic). It offers resident credit programs in Brussels (Belgium), in partnership with the Université Libre Internationale.
