Local Government Areas of Queensland prior to March 17, 2008

The following is a list of Local Government Areas in Queensland prior to March 17, 2008. The Government of Queensland amalgamated many Local Government Areas throughout the state, taking effect on that date.

In 2007, the Government had formed the Local Government Reform Commission to report on how local government could be streamlined in Queensland. The Commission recommended widespread amalgamations and boundary revisions affecting most councils throughout the state, and the government accepted the Commission's recommendations in full.

As a result, council elections for the new Local Government Areas were held on March 15, 2008, and the new councils were formed two days later. The number of councils was reduced from over 150 to 73.

The following list includes the Commission's opinion on the financial strength of each council, as well as a summary of how each council was affected by the reforms.
