Tarnovo Literary School

Tarnovo Literary School

The Tarnovo Literary School ( _bg. Търновска книжовна школа) was a major medieval Bulgarian cultural academy.

The school was established in the capital of the Bulgarian Empire Tarnovo in the 14th century by Saint Evtimiy of Tarnovo. Orthographic rules of the Bulgarian language were established and wrongly translated texts were corrected. These corrected texts became models for the Orthodox churches of Bulgaria, Serbia, Wallachia, Moldova and Russia using the Church Slavonic language.

Gregory Tsamblak, Cyprian, Joasaph of Bdin and Constantine of Kostenets are among the most prominent representatives of the school.
