HBT is a bistetrazole. [cite journal| journal = Chem. Mater |doi=10.1021/cm703657k |year= 2008 |title= Bistetrazoles: Nitrogen-Rich, High-Performing, Insensitive Energetic Compounds| author=Thomas M. Klapötke and Carles Miró Sabaté |url=http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/sample.cgi/cmatex/asap/html/cm703657k.html] It is an explosive approximately as powerful as HMX or CL-20, but it releases less toxic reaction products when detonated: ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. When combined with ADM or AN oxidizers, the amount of HCN produced by a deflagration may be reduced. The compound is thus considered by its advocates to be a more environmentally friendly explosive than traditional nitroamine-based explosives.

HBT is also known as 5,5'-hydrazinebistetrazole or 1,2-ditetrazolylhydrazine.
