Antonio Francisco Coronel (
October 21 ,1817 Mexico City -April 17 ,1894 ) served as mayor ofLos Angeles from 1853 to 1854. He is credited with establishing the Department of Public Works. Prior to beoming mayor of Los Angeles, he was an officer in the Mexican army.Coronel moved to Los Angeles in 1834 with his nephew
Agustin Olvera , and worked as a schoolteacher, served as a city councilman (1854-67) and as state treasurer (1867-71). His donated collection made the basis for theNatural History Museum of Los Angeles County .References
