History

WNEM-DT2's origins began on January 24, 2006 when UPN and The WB announced that they would cease broadcasting and merge. The new combined network would be called The CW. The letters would represent the first initial of its corporate parents, CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. On February 22, News Corporation announced that it would start up another new network called MyNetworkTV.

This new network, which would be sister to Fox, would be operated by FOX Television Stations and its syndication division, Twentieth Television. MyNetworkTV was created to give UPN and WB stations, not mentioned as becoming CW affiliates, another option besides becoming independent and to compete against The CW. It was later revealed that WB affiliate WBSF would become The CW affiliate for the region. After that, WNEM released plans to create a new second digital subchannel to become the area's MyNetworkTV affiliate. In August 2006, WNEM unveiled a new logo and branding for the digital subchannel named "My 5". There is no separate web address for WNEM-DT2 at the moment but there is a separate page on the WNEM website.

Programming

Programming on WNEM-DT2 consists of prime time MyNetworkTV programming and syndicated shows.

Guiding Light, a now-defunct CBS soap opera dropped by WNEM in 1996, returned to the market on "My 5"; as a result, all CBS programs are now cleared in the Mid-Michigan area. When Guiding Light was replaced by Let's Make a Deal on October 5, 2009, WNEM opted to show that program on DT2 instead of its main channel.

The station airs Fearless Music on Saturday nights at Midnight. It also carries Big Time Wrestling on early Saturday and Sunday mornings at 2. In 2008, WNEM-DT2 also aired live Central Michigan University Chippewas football games from ESPN's regional sports syndicator, ESPN Plus. When it launched, "My 5" replaced Detroit's NBC affiliate WDIV on Flint-area Comcast systems and Detroit's WKBD on Tri-Cities Charter systems. The station is also seen on Charter systems in the Alpena market also replacing WKBD. However, the main WNEM channel is not seen on that system due to WBKB-TV which is based in Alpena. Until some point in 2008, WNEM-DT2 had been the nearest MyNetworkTV affiliate for the Northern Michigan market (Traverse City and Cadillac). Access to the station was only offered on Charter systems in areas of the Alpena market that overlapped with the northern Michigan DMA. WLLZ-LP in Traverse City has since added MyNetworkTV.

On weekday mornings, WNEM-DT2 airs the nationally syndicated morning show The Daily Buzz from 6 to 9.
