University of Peradeniya started its MBA programme in year 1998 to cater for changing demand in the education sector locally and globally. Peradeniya University is regarded as the centre of excellence in education for last 60+ years. However, the start of its MBA program demonstrates a new era in management education in Sri Lanka as this is first market oriented degree offered by the University.

The full-time MBA program offered by University of Peradeniya one of the most highly-regarded and prestigious MBA courses in the Island. It is very well recognised for its high quality teaching using a wide variety of methods. Also it’s regarded as one of most rigorous MBA programs available in Sri Lanka. Over 900 students have enrolled in the MBA programme for last 10 years and only a less than 100 students have graduated with full qualification of an MBA. As per course guidelines, students are required to complete 16 subjects based on course work with a GPA of 3 out of 4 followed by submission of a thesis. Finally, students have a task of defending their thesis at the comprehensive examination in front of a panel of lecturers.

With recent changes to course guidelines, student may graduate with an MBM (Master of Business Management) after completion of 16 subjects based on course work without submitting a thesis. It is believed that most of the business executives may opt for this option as they don’t seem to find the time to engage in a research study. Also this will make the MBA programme more competitive with other MBA programs affiliated to foreign universities as some of the foreign universities offer MBAs based on course work only.

The MBA at University of Peradeniya is intellectually demanding and renowned for the quality of its graduates and it has been designed to promote career development and help students build their personal and leadership skills. However, some education experts argue that the MBA at University of Peradeniya is more intellectually focused than industry focused.
