] Canoe's first album, Places, was released December 10, 2007.Canoe is known primarily for it's remake of the cult-classic indie-pop song, Holland 1945, by Neutral Milk Hotel. The Neutral Milk Hotel album featuring Holland 1945 has been considered by multiple mainstream reviewers to be one of the top ten albums of the 1990's, though the majority of mainstream listeners have eschewed the album for it's almost irritable poor-recording quality and vocal intonation. Canoe's cover brought the song to a mainstream (less underground) audience, despite having polarized the music critics. While some reviews consider them successful in having made that song accessible to the average listener, others find their take on it offensive in having stripped away the original angst and chaos of the original (which made Neutral Milk Hotel's version so unique).
