Human Rights Torch Relay

The Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR) is a torch relay organized by the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong started in Athens on 09 August 2007 [ [http://www.humanrightstorch.org/news/relay-route/ Human Rights Torch Relay » Relay Route ] ] , one year before the start of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. It is planned to pass through 150 cities [ [http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/news/city/story.html?id=4b4fd555-3455-40ba-b594-3cd16aa28624 City rally hears student's tale of torture, imprisonment in China ] ] .

According to the organizers, the role of the Human Rights Torch relay is to raise awareness of the human rights record in the People's Republic of China. The organizers accused the Chinese government of being involved in various human rights violations, such as 2008 unrest in Tibet; the Darfur conflict; the persecution of Falun Gong; and crackdown of political dissidents. The main slogan of the torch relay is: "The Olympics and crimes against humanity cannot co-exist in China." Chen Kai, a former member of China’s national basketball team, compared the Beijing Olympics with the games in Germany in 1936, and in the Soviet Union in 1980, and said that "this year’s (Olympic games) will go down in history as a gross corruption of the Olympic spirit"
