- Shesher Kobita
Shesher Kobita is a novel byRabindranath Tagore . It was first published in book form in 1929. The novel was composed in 1928 and was serialised that year fromBhadro toChoitro in the magazine "Probashi".The poem 'Nirjharini' from this novel was later published as a separate poem in the collection of poems known as "Mohua".
The novel deals with Amit Ray, a barrister educated in
England and Labannya and is set primarily inShillong though the novel was written when Rabindranath was inBangalore . Both Amit and Labannya often recite poems. The novel also contains a self-reference. Amit Ray is critical of a much revered poet, Robi Thakur, a reference to himself. Rabindranath provides a critique for the reader reception of his own works. This novel and the featured original poems (those written by the fictitious poet Nibaran Chakrabarty, an alias of Amito himself) are said to have been a response to the rising tide of anti-Tagore sentiments in the younger generation of poets and writers.
