SAO Herzegovina

SAO Herzegovina (Serbian: "SAO Hercegovina"/"САО Херцеговина") or Serbian Autonomous Oblast of Herzegovina was a Serbian autonomous region (oblast) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was proclaimed by the Assembly of the Association of Municipalities of Bosnian Krajina in 1991 [cite web |url=http://www.un.org/icty/indictment/english/mil-ii011122e.htm |title=The Prosecutor of the Tribunal against Slobodan Milosevic – Indictment |publisher=International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia |accessdate=2008-05-16 ] and was subsequently included into Republika Srpska. SAO Herzegovina was located in the geographical region of Herzegovina. It was also known as SAO Eastern Herzegovina (Serbian: "SAO Istočna Hercegovina"/"САО Источна Херцеговина").

History

SAO Herzegovina was formed from the Association of Municipalities (a government in SFRY) known as Assembly of the Communities of Eastern Herzegovina, which was formed on May 27 1991. The SAO Herzegovina was formed on September 12 1991. It consisted of Eastern Herzegovina which had Serb ethnic majority. Its capital was Trebinje.
