Flying Start Challenge

The Flying Start Challenge is a contest run by Aerospace businesses and organisations in the South West of England for local secondary schools to help develop science and engineering skills whilst highlighting the opportunities available in a career in engineering.

Challenge format

The Challenge runs from October to March, concluding in an all-day event held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, in Yeovilton, Somerset, where both teachers and pupils are tested to the full...


School Visits
From October to January graduates from the sponsoring companies work closely with the participating schools instructing the children upon a number of aerospace subjects whilst assisting in the development of the schools hand launched glider


Regional Finals
Regional fly offs are held in the three main regions of the Flying Start Challenge:
Gloucester run by GE Aviation& Messier-Dowty
Bristol run by Airbus, Atkins, MBDA & Rolls Royce
Somerset & Dorset run by AgustaWestland


Finals Day

The winning schools from each region are invited to bring a class of 30 pupils to the Finals Day. During the day pupils are spilt into teams of 4 with a graduate assistant from one of the sponsor companies and participate in a number of engineering challenges in order to win prizes for both themselves and their school

Traditionally participating schools have been split into 6 groups

Activities

Traditionally three activities have been run throughout the day, two of these are activities and doubled up to ensure that group numbers are kept down to 30 students per group for easy management. Whilst the third activity is a trail around the museum.

Previous years items students have been asked to design and construct include:
Balloon Rocket
Egg Parachute Drop

Wing box challenge

Hovercraft

The students are then allowed to race/test their design against other teams in their group with prizes awarded for best performing design and how well the design meets other task criteria such as weight or size.

Fly off's

VIP's

Traditionally the challenge has had a VIP from the engineering world to give a short presentation to the students at the start of the day and present their prizes at the end. Previous VIP's have included: Richard Noble, Concorde pilots Jock Lowe and Mike Bannister and Johnny Ball

Prizes

Prizes are awarded to the students for a number of categories these include:
Best Overall School - Which wins a Cheque for £1,000 from the sponsoring companies for the design department
Best Performing Team - Who win microlight flights sponsored by [http://www.skytime.co.uk/ Skytime]
Best Performing Team for each of the challenges
Highest team score in the museum trail
Best Overall Glider - Who win glider flights sponsored by [http://www.bggc.co.uk/ The Bristol and Gloucester Gliding Club]


Challenge organisation


The running of the challenge is divided equally into seven rolls amongst the aerospace companies graduates:

Treasurer
Activities
Schools Liaison
Finals Day Coordinator
Marketing
VIP & Publicity

These Roles are rotated annually to ensure a fresh ideas in the challenge at that one company is not stuck in the same role over a number of years
