Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1958

Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1958

The 1958 elections to select inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame followed a system which was established following the 1956 election. The BBWAA held an election to select from among recent players. The Veterans Committee, which then held elections in alternate years with the BBWAA, did not hold an election. For the second time, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony was cancelled due to there being no inductees.

BBWAA election

The BBWAA was authorized to elect players active in 1938 or later, but not after 1952. All 10-year members of the BBWAA were eligible to vote.

For the first time, voters were permitted to vote for less than 10 candidates, and were now instructed to cast votes for "up to" 10 candidates. The revision resulted from complaints by many BBWAA members following the 1956 election that there was a scarcity of viable candidates – a situation which had been partially caused by changes in the rules for candidate eligibility. Any candidate receiving votes on at least 75% of the ballots would be honored with induction to the Hall. Votes were cast for 119 players; a total of 266 ballots were cast, with 200 votes required for election.

Candidates who were eligible for the first time are indicated here with a †. Candidates who have since been elected in subsequent elections are indicated in "italics".
