A bow window, is a curved bay window. [ [http://ah.bfn.org/a/DCTNRY/b/bow.html "Bow window" at The Illustrated Architecture Dictionary] ] Bow windows are designed to create space by projecting beyond the exterior wall of a building, and to provide a wider view of the garden or street outside, [http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/ukcorrespondents/hometruths/july07/bowwindow.htm "The return of the bow window", The Telegraph, July 2007] ] and typically combine four or more casement windows, which join together to form an arch.

Bow windows first appeared in the eighteenth century in the United Kingdom, (and in the Federal period in the United States), [ [http://ah.bfn.org/a/DCTNRY/f/fed.html Federal ] ] and enjoyed a renewed popularity in the 1970s and 1980s.
