*Vaudevillean Mamie Smith records "Crazy Blues" for Okeh Records, the first blues song commercially recorded by an African American singer,Crawford, pg. 562] Jones, pg. 99] and the first vocal blues recording of any kind, [Malone and Stricklin, pg. 45] a few months after making the first documented recording by an African American female singer, [Southern, pg. 369] "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" and "That Thing Called Love", which were successful enough for Okeh to commission "Crazy Blues". Stylistically, it is a mixture of blues and the music of the vaudeville stage, and the song [Davis, pg. 29] becomes a surprising commercial success that opens up the market for African American music by selling more than 8,000 copies a week for several months. It is followed by a string of hits by African American women singers. [Chase, pg. 496]
*A paper shortage contributes to a cost increase and a downturn in the sheet music publishing industry. [Crawford, pg. 675]
*Joseph Patek forms a family band that will become one of the longest-lasting and most influential Czech-Texan groups.
