"The Hunter, Hunted" is the 115th episode of the television series "Third Watch" and the 5th episode of the 6th season.

Plot Summary

In a continuation of the last episode, the police officers try to solve the mystery of the dead girl who appeared in a dumpster outside the precinct.

The episode starts with Tyrone Davis Jr. (Ty) and Sasha Monroe (Sasha) calling Lt. Swerzky and Officer John Sullivan (Sully) for help after they discover a dead body in a dumspter outside the precinct. When Swerzky and Faith Yokas (Faith) check the body, they notice needle and handcuff marks. They soon notice the note the body is carrying, which says "For Lieutenant Miller "I'm not going away", and question what does Miller have to do with the body.

As Miller arrives, he is shocked to see the note is addressed to him, and calls his previous precinct to inform the chief about the new body, accusing him of not using all the resources they had to find the serial killer. He then tells Maritza Cruz (Cruz) that he was transferred because his boss didn't want him to further investigate, or to reveal that a serial killer was on the loose. Cruz then calls him a liar, telling him he had told her he had come to the precinct to slow her down, but Miller says that the circumstances of his transfer don't change his function at the precinct.

Miller then goes to Swerzky and asks why a rookie detective like Yokas is on the case, as he would prefer an experienced detective. Faith then tells him that as inexperienced as she may be, she wants to know why his name is in the letter, and that they could solve the case by looking through her "new eyes." Miller predicts that she will not find any prints, and that the needle marks were made by 16 inch needles, as in the previous cases.

Meanwhile, Brendan Finney is at a party with his friends, celebrating his first "smelly" (in reference to the dead body he found in the last episode). He makes a wish: to die in the street so that someone will find him. He then realizes that Grace Foster is in the same club as he is, and hits on her. They then proceed to have drinks. Later, Brendan is in the bathroom. Someone repeatedly knocks on the door, and Brendan opens up to see Grace. She asks him where is the weirdest place he "did it", and he says he wishs it's in the bathroom, and they end up "hooking up".

After their first kiss, Carlos goes to visit Holly to tell her that they are not together, but she tells him to come in because all her neighbours are listening. They end up in bed too, and soon Carlos begins coughing, as he is allergic to her cats. He then disabuses her of any romantic notions, telling her that this is not a "you and me" relationship, it is a "me" relationship, and that it should not change their situation in the paramedic unit.

Faith directs Brendan and Ty to ask people around the neighborhood if they had seen anything concerning the dead girl, and Brendan immediately goes to the paramedic house, alleging that Grace was working in the night (Ty notice he is in love with her). When they don't find her, they asks Holly, who reveals she is dating Carlos (she previously had told the fire department guys that she was dating him without Carlos being there).
Carlos and Grace get a 911 call asking them to go to 69 and Kent, where a man is supposedly not breathing. When they get to the place, its deserted and looks dangerous, but a man starts asking for help. Following him, they discover he has a drug addicted friend with him who wants the drugs that the ambulance is carrying. One of them goes to Grace and asks for the ambulance keys, and starts feeling on her, which Carlos can't take. They fight and Carlos ends up sustaining a head injury (the 10th according to him), which leaves Grace very concerned, as he is unconscious. Ty and Brendan show up in the scene, Grace is being held at gunpoint by one of the men (the other one escaped with the drugs). The man asks them to throw their guns to the floor or he'll shoot Grace, but Brendan reacts quickly and shoots him in the head. They then proceed to take Carlos to the emergency room, and afterwards Brendan and Grace act awkwardly when they are talking.
In the meantime, Faith sits with Jelly in his office and he asks her many questions, but Faith seems distracted, until Miller shows up with the previous cases box, which contains detailed information on the serial killer's previous victims. She then tells him she is going to the morgue, and he follows her. They soon discover they have a lot in common, they both have children (Miller has 10 and 9 year old girls), and they are both separated from their partners because of their involvement with their jobs. Miller then tells her that he has run out of luck in the case, and he could use some. They seem to be lucky when they get a print from a soda can in the dumpster, which leads them to Harvey Tanner, a sexual offender. The dates in which he was released from prison and when the first victim, Becky, was killed seem to coincide and they go to catch him, but find out that he is not guilty, as he had only been changing his address in the precinct and drank a soda.
A girl shows up in the station, and proves to be Rae Ann's (the victim) friend, denying that she is a prostitute. She says that she and Rae Ann were driving by, and she stopped to buy something, and when she returned, she saw a man take an unconscious Rae into his dark blue/black van and leave.
Meanwhile, we see many scenes regarding the real serial killer, who works as a nurce in a geriatric institution, and they reveal his name, Jeffrey. He stalks his new victim, Tara Conelly, and captures her by showing her puppies in her truck. After watching the news, where Miller was telling people that he had catched the killer, he gets angry and hands himself to the police, informing them that his latest victim has only 12 hours to live.
