Bredevoort

Bredevoort

Bredevoort is a small town of about 1600 inhabitants, between Aalten and Winterswijk. It is located in the municipality of Aalten.

Since 1993, Bredevoort presents itself as "Bredevoort boekenstad" ("Bredevoort book town"), after the examples of Hay-on-Wye in Wales and Redu in Belgium. There are now more than twenty second-hand book shops in the town.

Bredevoort was a separate municipality until 1818, when it became a part of Aalten. [Repertorium Nederlandse Gemeenten]

History

The name Bredevoort appears for the first time on the list with properties of the archbishop of Cologne in 1188, who owned shares of the castle Bredevoort. The fight for the whole possession of the castle between Munster and Gelderland began when the earl of Steinfurt tried to sell his share of the castle to the bishop of Munster, and the earl of Lohn tried to sell his share to the earl of Gelderland. The fight lasted almost two centuries.

From 1326, Bredevoort was actual part of Gelderland. Between 1326 and 1696 the municipality of Bredevoort repeatedly changed ownership. The former municipality of Bredevoort was comprised of the city, the castle Bredevoort, and the villages Aalten, Dinxperlo and Winterswijk. After centuries of war, its fortifications were demolished by its inhabitants.

In 1646 lightning hit the gunpowder tower of the castle, which blew up the castle and many houses in the city, killing several people, including Lord Haersolte of Bredevoort and his family. Only one son, Anthonie, who was not home that day, survived.

In 1818 was the municipality of Bredevoort dissolved and since then is part of the city Bredevoort under the newly formed municipality Aalten.
