The University of Flensburg (German "Universität Flensburg ") is a university in the city of Flensburg, Germany. It was founded in 1994.

The University of Flensburg is the northernmost university in Germany - the university is not Full University. The focus is on the training of teachers and other courses in the field of Education social sciences.

Among the special features include the German-Danish study courses in cooperation with the University of Southern Denmark Sønderborg, in which the association with the Fachhochschule common university involved.

History

The University of Flensburg is young, its name dating only from 1994. The first plans to found a university inthe town reach back over 300 years ago when Flensburg was still part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The foundingof the Teacher Training College in 1946 marks the beginning of the later university. Initially setting out with a15-month training course for 200 war returnees, the first teacher training courses started in the winter of 1946/47with 94 students.

Teacher training still forms the main profile of today's university, but the introduction of the
Business Management study programs led to the designation ’Educational University’ and paved the way totoday's University of Flensburg.

Since Winter Semester 2002/2003 the university has also physically relocatedfrom the site of the old college.

Unique in Germany, the university's modern campus site is providedwith facilities which fulfil the highest technical and multimedia requirements. As part of this, the universitycampus with its landscaped surroundings, refectory and lecture theatre complex are largely equipped with
WLAN-access. This means that cordless internet access is possible from every location within the university.

The University of Flensburg also offers a wide range of attractive leisure and sports activities. There is a fitnesscentre fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. The range of courses offered extends from indoor cycling, aerobics,karate, aikaido and taekwondo to waterskiing, sailing and surfing.

In a joint assessment exercise conductedacross all German universities by the Centre for University Development (CHE) and ’Stern’ magazine, thesports courses offered on campus by the University of Flensburg were evaluated as ”top quality”.

The University of Flensburg is founded in a teaching college shows and bundles special teacher training in the Land - with the exception of prospective Secondary school teacher in the University of Kiel study. Currently there are around 4,200 students enrolled at the university.

The university has 200 permanent employees and more than 400 visiting professors and lecturers. In the winter semester 2006/2007, the University of around 4,200 applicants, in the winter semester of the year-earlier figure was only 2,566.

At the top of the applications was in the winter semester 2006/2007 the degree Bachelor of Arts in teaching science, 1977 applicants, followed by the bachelor course International Management with 547 candidates.
