19th Army (Soviet Union)

The 19th Army was a field army of the Soviet Union's Red Army, formed in 1941 and active during the Second World War.

19th Army was included in the Second Strategic Echelon of the Red Army. Its commander at first was General Lieutenant Ivan Konev. The Army was forming near Vitebsk and was formed from Zek political prisoners shortly released from GULAG prisoner camps. 19th Army with 13th Army, 20th Army, 21st Army, and 22nd Army was stationed on line through Dzisna-Polotsk-Vitebsk-Orsha-River Dniepr-Lojev. Those Armies were defending "The Smolensk Gate" which was the shortest route to the USSR's capital. There mission was not to let the Germans to came near to Moscow. During the defence of Smolensk 19th Army was encircled together with 16th Army and 22nd Army. Only elements of the Army fought their way out of the encirclement.
