The song is a classic rock cut and was written by poet and lyricist Robert Hunter, who the Dead often considered a band member. The song has several psychedelic influences which are heard from the repeating beat and mysterious words. There are many vague and obscure facts in the song, including "garland", which in Greek is "stefanos". It is unclear who St. Stephen really is.
