Closed Schools
The following elementary schools were closed in a consolidation effort around 1980:
- Danby Elementary School (Building now used for some district offices. After the school closed, the building was sold by the district, and then subsequently repurchased a decade later at ten times the original selling price.)
- East Hill Elementary School
- Glenwood Elementary School (now part of the Franziska Racker Center)
- Henry St. John Elementary School
- West Hill Elementary School (Building now houses the Lehman Alternative Community School.)
Cayuga Heights Elementary School was also closed for several years at the time but was later reopened.
On February 2, 2010, Superintendent Pastel proposed closing Fall Creek Elementary School as one of several options to explore in order to relieve a budget shortfall. Students at Fall Creek would have been absorbed into Beverly J. Martin, Belle Sherman, and South Hill Schools. On March 9, 2010, the ICSD school board passed a motion by a vote of 5-4 to keep all eight elementary schools open and calling for an examination of district building usage, meaning that Fall Creek will remain open for at least one more school year.
