- Whitmore Reans
Whitmore Reans is an
inner city area ofWolverhampton , West Midlands,England . It is situated to the north-west of the city centre, in the city council's Park and St Peter's wards.It has a shopping arcade which replaced some of the terraced housing called 'The Avion Centre', which has shops, take-aways and a bank.
Newhampton Road East and Newhampton Road West (which form the boundary between the Park and St Peter's wards) are secondary roads, but form the main road through Whitmore Reans] .
Most of Whitmore Reans was constructed between 1890 and 1914, but the construction of houses and high-rise flats took place during the 1960s by the local council.
By the 1980s, Whitmore Reans was one of the most troubled part of the West Midlands, plagued by crime, unemployment and urban decay. Many of the older houses were still without bathrooms or indoor toilets, and there were calls for the whole pre-1914 housing stock to be cleared (some low-scale demolition had already taken place when the newer council properties were built).
Regeneration of Whitmore Reans over the last 20 years has seen the older houses brought up to date, and a few businesses set up in the area, including a
SEAT car dealership.Since the 1890s, Whitmore Reans has been dominated by the Wolverhampton Wanderers football ground, which stands on the eastern side of Waterloo Road.
