Helen Oxenbury

Oxenbury grew up in Ipswich, England [ [http://www.walker.co.uk/contributors/Helen-Oxenbury-3152.aspx Helen Oxenbury at Walker Books] ] and from a very early age developed a passion for drawing. She attended art school as a teenager, and during holidays she worked at the "Ipswich Repertory Theatre Workshop", mixing paints. After marrying John Burningham, another of the world’s most eminent children’s book illustrators and giving birth, she turned to illustrating children’s books. She is among the most popular and critically acclaimed illustrators of her time.

In 1988, she created a series of books about a mischievous young boy called Tom, and his stuffed monkey, Pippo. She commented that Tom was very much like her son in his younger years. Like Tom, her son would often blame his misdeeds on an accomplice (the family dog).
