Bishop Heber College is the oldest educational institution in
Tiruchirappalli ,Tamil Nadu ,India .It is as old as the system of Higher Education in IndiaFact|date=June 2008. Being hoary, it has a rich, healthy and deep-rooted tradition. It was started as a school in 1762 by the German Missionary, Christian Frederick Schwartz. By 1825, the School had been vested in the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and was called S.P.G School. 64 years after Schwartz, "another charismatic misionary, a sedate Englishman, called Regianld Heber, visited Trichy". He was then, the Lord Bishop of Calcutta and the Chief Missionary to the East. he embarked on the diocesan tour, visiting Delhi, Agra, Bombay and Madras. The peripatetic Bishop visited Trichy on 31st March1926 and for 3 consecutive days worked hard, preaching, planning and preparing his blueprint for the growth of the Church and the School. On the 3ed of April, he unexpectedly died, finding a watery grave in the bath near the house of the Judge, where he was staying. 47 years after his death, his prophetic wish, that the School should grow into a College came true.
In the year 2006,the college celebrated 40th aniversary.
