Rushville is a village in Ontario and Yates Counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 621 at the 2000 census.

Most of the Village of Rushville is within the Town of Potter in Yates County and a small part is in the Town of Gorham in Ontario County.

History

Elisha Gilbert was the first settler in Rushville.Rushville was originally called Federal Hollow. The town was called this because many of Rushville's first settlers were from Massachusetts and favored the Federalist political party. The Village changed the name after the turn of the century when the Jeffersonian party grew more popular, and Rushville was renamed after Dr. Benjamin Rush of Revolutionary fame. Rushville is said to be the first place in America to be named for Jefferson's good friend.

Geography

Rushville is located at coor dms|42|45|40|N|77|13|34|W|city (42.761136, -77.226177)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.7 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Rushville is in the Finger Lakes District of New York and lies between Canandaigua Lake and Seneca Lake. The West River flows southwest through the village.

New York State Route 245 and New York State Route 247, pass, partly conjoined, through the Village of Rushville.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 621 people, 224 households, and 155 families residing in the village. The population density was 973.6 people per square mile (374.6/km²). There were 236 housing units at an average density of 370.0/sq mi (142.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.97% White, 1.61% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.

There were 224 households out of which 38.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the village the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $35,625, and the median income for a family was $43,047. Males had a median income of $32,857 versus $22,708 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,848. About 8.9% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.
