Maiden is home to the Maiden High School Blue Devils and is considered "the biggest little football town in the world". The town of Maiden received a new high school for the 2006-2007 school year. As the construction cost for the school exceeded 33 million dollars, the proposal was widely debated throughout the county. Nevertheless, construction was eventually approved by the Catawba County school board and the Catawba County board of Commissions. Following completion of the new campus, it became apparent that enrollment would need to increase in order to justify the larger size of the school. Therefore, the Maiden school district was expanded to include several hundred more students from Catawba, and Fred T. Foard.

The current mayor is Robert L. Smyre. He was preceded by Zane Hudson. Smyre was also a barber in town for more than 50 years until recently, when he sold his shop.

In 2009, Apple Inc. entered into negotiations with the town of Maiden about the possibility of opening a new plant in the western part of the town. The cost of the plant is projected to be over 1 billion dollars and could potentially create several thousand jobs.
