Buckeye Lake is a village in Fairfield and Licking counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 3,049 at the 2000 census. It is named for Buckeye Lake, a large lake along which the village is built.

History

Buckeye Lake was the first large reservoir built in America and became Ohio's first State Park in 1949. Built near the highest point of elevation between the Scioto and Muskingum River watersheds, it was constructed to supply water for the canal system. The village grew up on the shores of the lake.

Geography

Buckeye Lake is located at coor dms|39|56|2|N|82|28|51|W|city (39.933899, -82.480946)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²), of which, 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²) of it is land and 0.49% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,049 people, 1,240 households, and 788 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,497.8 people per square mile (577.1/km²). There were 1,535 housing units at an average density of 754.0/sq mi (290.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.05% White, 0.62% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.

There were 1,240 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $28,889, and the median income for a family was $33,800. Males had a median income of $27,583 versus $19,881 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,475. About 13.2% of families and 16.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.1% of those under age 18 and 14.1% of those age 65 or over.
