Production and marketing

With Move Along, The All-American Rejects first wrote for the new album in the fall of 2003. The song "Dance Inside" was put together and then was performed at concerts in October. Other than this, the band didn't start working on their second album until touring wrapped up.[2]

Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler spent 10 months writing at their homes in Destin, Florida. The first two tracks on the album, “Dirty Little Secret” and “Stab My Back”, were finished right before they went to Atlanta in October 2004 to work with the other band members for full arrangements. By December the band had begun pre-production in Burbank, California. The songs on Move Along were recorded in seven weeks. The album was then mixed in March 2005.[3]

A day before U.S. version was released on July 12, 2005, the UK version of Move Along. It features two bonus tracks not available on the U.S. version. Also on the iTunes Store a deluxe edition of the album was released featuring five live tracks recorded at the Wiltern Theater at Los Angeles, California.[4]

Two B-sides of Move Along, "Kiss Yourself Goodbye" and "Eyelash Wishes", were not made for the final cut of the album. The All-American Rejects, though, took the initiative to record these tracks and co-produced making them along with Mike Plotnikoff and Paul Decarli, the former recording the tracks on Move Along, and the latter was the ProTools editor for the album. Both tracks were featured on the "Move Along" CD single, and "Eyelash Wishes" became a bonus track on the UK version of Move Along.

As well as being released on compact disc, Move Along was released on 12" vinyl by Doghouse Records, November 7, 2006.[5] Only a limited 1000 copies were produced. The first 500 copies printed included a black 7" single of "Eyelash Wishes". A cassette tape of Move Along was also released in Indonesia, with an acoustic version of "Night Drive" as a bonus track.

Singles

The first single from the album, "Dirty Little Secret", was first released to Modern Rock radios on June 6, 2005. It was later released coinciding with Move Along on July 12 to contemporary hit radio. The second single, "Move Along", was released on February 28, 2006, but didn't meet its peak on the charts until summer, with "Dirty Little Secret" still in the spotlight. In July, a song from Move Along called "Top of the World" was released as a promotional single to modern rock stations in the United States. "It Ends Tonight" was released on September 19, 2006, after "Move Along" was declining in the charts, and became Move Along's third top-ten hit.

Music videos

For all four of the singles released for Move Along, a music video was made for each one, starting with "Dirty Little Secret" released July 11, 2005.[6] The video received a nomination for "Best International Video - Group" from the Canadian music video channel MuchMusic Video Awards. The video for "Move Along" was released on January 18, 2006,[7] which it was nominated for four awards. At the MTV Video Music Awards, it was nominated for "Best Editing" and won "Best Group Video", and at the Music Video Production Association Awards it was nominated for "Best Editing" again, and won "Best Pop Video". The video for "Move Along" was also nominated for "Director of the Year", the director being Marc Webb. A video for the promotional single "Top of the World" was mashed together from tour and concert footage. This video was followed by the video for "It Ends Tonight" on August 25.
