"This article incorporates text from this source, which is in the public domain.] Although education is free, there are additional expenses (e.g., transportation and books) that might prohibit poorer families from sending their children to school. In 1996, the gross primary enrollment rate was 38.6 percent, and the net primary enrollment rate was 31.7 percent. Both gross and net enrollment rates are lower for girls than for boys. Primary school attendance rates were unavailable for Djibouti in 2001. While enrollment rates indicate a level of commitment to education, they do not always reflect children’s participation in school.
