Summerville is a town in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 48,091 as of August 2008. [1] The city is a distant suburb of Charleston; and has thus experienced rapid population growth. Summerville is included within the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized Area and the Charleston–North Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has the fourth largest city limit population within this metro after Charleston, North Charleston, and Mount Pleasant.

Geography

Summerville is located at coor dms|33|0|29|N|80|10|58|W|city (33.008154, -80.182891)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.4 square miles (39.8 km²), all land.

Demographics

The population was 48,091 as of August 2008. [1]

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 27,752 people, 10,391 households, and 7,523 families residing in the town. The population density of Summerville is 697.6/km² (1,806.7/sq mi). There are 11,087 housing units at an average density of 721.8/sq mi (278.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 77.19% Caucasian, 19.38% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.97% of the population.

There were 10,391 households out of which 39.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.7% of the population is under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $43,635, while the median income for a family was $51,469. The per capita income for the town was $20,103. About 6.1% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older.

Tourism

The town of Summerville hosts the annual Flowertown Festival. It is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina. It is held the first weekend of April in the Summerville Azalea Park. Since the late 1800’s, tourists and residents alike have come to Summerville for the local floral fairs, and to enjoy the thousands of azaleas. The popular azalea overflows from private and public gardens, including the mid-town Azalea Park. In 1925, these wonderful flowers inspired Summerville’s Chamber of Commerce to adopt the slogan "Flower Town in the Pines”. The town’s Inaugural Flower Festival was held in 1941, and has been held in April ever year since.
