The first edition of the AFF Under 16 Championship took place in Indonesia in July 2008.

Five nations competed in a round-robin format. The best two teams then met again in the final. All matches were played in the Lebak Bulus Stadium in Jakarta.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore represented the ASEAN region, with associate member Australia also present. Guest nation Bahrain also appeared.
