Alcimus (rhetorician)

Alcimus (rhetorician)

:"For other uses, see Alcimus (disambiguation)."Alcimus (Gr. polytonic|Ἄλκιμος) was a Greek rhetorician who flourished around 300 BC.cite encyclopedia | last = Schmitz | first = Leonhard | authorlink = | title = Alcimus (2) | editor = William Smith | encyclopedia = Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology | volume = 1 | pages = 102 | publisher = Little, Brown and Company | location = Boston | year = 1867 | url = http://www.ancientlibrary.com/smith-bio/0111.html ] He was called by Diogenes Laërtius the most distinguished of all Greek rhetoricians. [Diogenes Laërtius, ii. 114] It is not certain whether he is the same as the Alcimus to whom Diogenes in another passage ascribes a work called "Pros Amuntan" (polytonic|πρὸς Ἀμύνταν). [Diogenes Laërtius, iii. 9] Athenaeus in several places speaks of a Sicilian Alcimus, who appears to have been the author of a great historical work, parts of which are referred to under the names of "Italica" (polytonic|Ἰταλικὰ) and "Sicelica" (polytonic|Σικελικά). But whether he was the same as the rhetorician Alcimus, cannot be determined. [Athenaeus, x. p. 441, xii. p. 518, vii. p. 322]
