American Ceramics

"American Ceramics" is an extraordinary quarterly art magazine founded to enhance the knowledge and preservation of the rich heritage of ceramics and to document contemporary developments in the field. The magazine offers a sophisticated perspective on clay art from around the world through perceptive critical writing and stunning photography.

Publication

The editorial lineup of each issue of "American Ceramics" is built on a specific theme. The most recent issue, "Ceramic Sculpture Toward the Monumental", features an essay entitled "Visionary Ceramics" by noted art critic, Arthur Danto.

Each issue of the magazine includes exclusive interviews with notable figures in the art world such as Milton Glaser, Frank Gehry, Beatrice Wood, Santiago Calatrava, Garth Clark, Agnes Gund, Francois Gilat, Paul Greenhalgh, Jack Lenor Larsen and Santiago Calatrava.

A staple of "American Ceramics" has always been the review section, where the work of artists from throughout the United States and around the world are critiqued. Past issues of the magazine have included the works of Betty Woodman, Charles Simonds, Richard DeVore, Viola Frey, John Mason, Jun Kaneko, Michael Lucero, Kathy Butterly, Ken Price, Toshiko Takaezu, Ron Nagle and Anthony Caro.

"American Ceramics" chronicles the achievements of the early pioneers who transformed ceramics into a genuine art form, while at the same time introducing today’s most promising talent. Celebrating 25 years of publishing, "American Ceramics" has become the benchmark of ceramic art publishing, playing a significant role in elevating ceramic art to unprecedented levels of collectability and prominence.

Design

"American Ceramics" is set in a classically elegant yet modern design created by iconic graphic designer Massimo Vignelli, which earned the magazine a gold medal from the Society of Publication Designers.

For two decades, he served as the director of the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. Kuchta is also a curator and writer whose articles have appeared in numerous magazines, books and catalogs, and has served as a frequent juror and conference speaker for competitive juried exhibitions and conferences in Japan, Korea, China, Canada, Italy, Egypt, England and Portugal. Kuchta is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and earlier in his career the was chief curator of the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Harry Dennis is the founding publisher of "American Ceramics" and recent co-publisher of the book "Fertile Forms: The Sculpture of Gustav and Ulla Kraitz". Educated in the United States and Sweden, he has worked for the State Department in Latin America, Europe and Asia. In addition to his work in the print media, Dennis currently is preparing to launch the "Art Catalog Index", a digital search program for libraries.
