Education Management Corporation

Education Management Corporation (EDMC) is a leading private operator of post-secondary educational institutions, primarily in the United States. The company's institutions provide primarily career-focused educational programs.

The company is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and employs approximately 13,000 faculty and staff and had enrollment of approximately 96,000 students as of its autumn 2007 semester. EDMC was founded in 1962.

On June 1, 2006, a consortium of private equity investors acquired Education Management in a transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. The principal investors in Education Management are Providence Equity Partners, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Leeds Equity Partners. The leveraged buyout of EDMC was the largest buyout in the for-profit education sector to that point. [ANDREW ROSS SORKIN. Programs

EDMC operates post-secondary educational institutions under the following brands:

* Argosy University – With 19 locations Argosy offers undergraduate and graduate-level programs in business, education, health sciences, and psychology and behavioral sciences. * The Art Institutes – With 41 locations across North America, Ai provides career preparation courses in the visual, creative, and applied arts, including design, media, fashion, and culinary programs. EDMC acquired Ai in 1970.

* Brown Mackie College – With 19 locations, Brown Mackie provides career preparation courses in health sciences, business, information technology, design, and legal studies. EDMC acquired American Education Centers in 2003 and renamed the schools Brown Mackie College in November 2004.

* The Connecting Link, located in Ventura, California.

* South University – A four-year, university offering associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree programs in a variety of subjects. The school has five campuses located in Savannah, Georgia, Montgomery, Alabama, Columbia, South Carolina as well as West Palm Beach and Tampa, Florida. EDMC acquired South University in April 2003.

* Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, California, which offers a J.D. program.
