The Great Central Railway Class 1 - London and North Eastern Railway Class B2, later B19 - were a class of steam locomotives designed by John G. Robinson for express passenger train services and introduced to service between December 1912 and 1913. Although intended to take over all the best express services, they had problems in service. The design of the fire grate and ash pan was poor, leading to air supply problems and therefore steaming difficulties, especially considering the large size of the boiler. The axleboxes occasionally overheated due to the large force from the inside cylinders. The GCR Class 11E (later to be rebuilt as GCR Class 11F) were being designed at the same time and proved to be much better in service, taking over most of the duties the Class 1 were originally designed for.
