Kristian Ottosen

Kristian Ottosen (born January 15, 1921 in Solund - died June 1, 2006 in Oslo) was a Norwegian non-fiction writer and public servant. While still a student, he was also active in the Norwegian resistance movement during World War II and was imprisoned as a Nacht und Nebel inmate. After the war, he finished his studies at the University of Bergen, where he became the leader of the Det Norske Studentersamfund first in Bergen, and then as a full-time employee at the University of Oslo. He led the commission that recommended the founding of regional university colleges throughout Norway and for establishment of the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. He also chaired the board of NRK from 1972 to 1979, and Nationaltheatret from 1981 to 1989 [cite web |url= http://www.nrk.no/underholdning/store_norske/4380935.html |title= Kristian Ottosen |accessdate= 2008-07-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= Soot-Ryen |first= Trond |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= 2005-04-01 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= NRK |pages= |language= Norwegian |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] [cite web |url= http://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/artikkel.php?artid=304647 |title= Kristian Ottosen er død |accessdate= 2008-07-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= 2006-06-01 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= VG |pages= |language= Norwegian |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] .

After he retired, Ottosen wrote a series of historical accounts from World War II. These included memoirs from his work in the Norwegian resistance as well as thorough historical surveys of Norwegians who were arrested and detained by Nazi authorities during the war. For this work he was honored by the Norwegian Freedom of Expression Foundation in 2004, was made commander in the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and named honorary member of the Norwegian Labour Party [cite web |url= http://www.regjeringen.no/nb/dep/smk/Statsministerens-kontor/Statsminister_Jens_Stoltenberg/Taler-og-artikler/2006/Tale-ved-Kristian-Ottosens-bare.html?id=113813 |title= Graveside speech over Kristian Ottosen |accessdate= 2008-07-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= Stoltenberg |first= Jens |authorlink= Jens Stoltenberg |coauthors= |date= 2006-06-09 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= Government of Norway |pages= |language= Norwegian |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] [cite web |url= http://www.fritt-ord.no/artikkel.asp?AId=28&MId1=5 |title= Fritt Ords Honnør|accessdate= 2008-07-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= Jens |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= The Freedom of Expression Foundation |pages= |language= Norwegian |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] .
