Adirondack Park Visitor Information Center

Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Centers (VICs) in Newcomb and Paul Smiths were created by the New York State Adirondack Park Agency to enhance public awareness of the Adirondack Park's resources and the Agency’s role in their protection. A third VIC is planned at Lake George.

The VICs are designed to introduce visitors to the special features of the Adirondack Park which, at six million acres (24,000 km²), is the East coast's greatest wilderness. The centers provide environmental education and help orient visitors to the park by providing small but diverse trail systems, special events, environmental exhibits and related public programs.

The Paul Smiths VIC hosts the Great Adirondack Birding Festival annually, along with bird walks, and regular birding activities and naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. The convert|60|acre|ha|sing=on Paul Smiths property contains every habitat type found in the Adirondack Park except alpine, and field trips are offered to nearby mountain, wetland and boreal habitats. The property includes a marsh, five ponds, and several brooks, as well as swamps, bogs, fens, and varied forest types including northern boreal forest.

The Newcomb VIC hosts an annual Adirondack Raptor Celebration. There are five resident, non-releasable raptors: a great horned owl, eastern screech owl, northern saw-whet owl, American kestrel, and a red-tailed hawk. The center also offers bird walks, naturalist-led trail walks, guided back-country trips, and workshops on snowshoes and GPS usage.

Most VIC programs are free.
