Finningley railway station was a railway station in Finningley, Nottinghamshire. [British Railways Atlas.1947. p.16] It is located on the Doncaster to Lincoln Line approximately one mile (1.6km) from the Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport (the former RAF Finningley) . The station closed to passengers on 11 September 1961 [ [http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/f/finningley/index.shtml Subterranea Britannica - Finningley] ] but the now derelict platforms remain, along with the former station buildings (which are now a private residence) and signal box, which remains in use to supervise the nearby level crossing. Planning permission for a new station slightly further north to serve the airport has recently been granted by Doncaster Council [ [http://www.railnews.co.uk/news/general/2008/07/02-doncaster-robin-hood.html Take-Off For Airport Station Plans] ] and discussions regarding station design and service levels are currently taking place between the local authority, Network Rail and the various TOCs with a view to opening the new station in 2011.
