The Faculty of Philosophy and Literature ( _es. Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, or FFyL) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is responsible for administering 11 humanism and science based majors; it has both Undergraduate and Graduate studies. It is one of the biggest and most renowned literature faculties in the Spanish-speaking world. It is the Alma Mater of Nobel Prize Octavio Paz and a number of other important characters in the Latin American literature.

History

The direct ancestor of this Faculty is the High Studies National School, founded in 1910 by order of Justo Sierra as an attempt to establish a school where the higher level specialist of every research field would be formed. The Faculty itself would be created 14 years later hosting 4 majors, Sciences, Philosophy, Literature and Historic Sciences. It has since become one of the most dynamic schools in the UNAM, with the addition of new majors and removal of its science studies branch. Organization & Departments

Is divided in 11 main divisions, each of one administers a major, they are called colleges ( _es. Colegios):

* Biotechnological
* History
* Pedagogy
* Classic Literature
* Latin American Studies
* Hispanic Literature
* Philosophy
* Geography
* Theater and Drama Literature
* Modern Literature
* Meteorologic Observations

Location and facilities

The Faculty is located in Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City, nearby the Faculty of Law and the Main Library.

It consists in one main complex and it has some joint research with some research centers such as the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE).

Organizations

Graduate programs

It holds Graduate programs for each of the divisions it has. It also hold some programs with other faculties and institutes all over the country.

Political Activism

The Faculty (along with Science Faculty) has a notorious image within the UNAM as an activist one; during the 1999 strike, it kept the strike longer than any other Faculty. To this day, the Faculty's main performing arts space, the Justo Sierra Theatre, remains "occupied" by members of the group that led the strike, inhabiting the premises and refusing to relinquish their control over to the University authorities, their rightful ruling body. That same group often will close the entire Faculty (effectively preventing the nearly 8000 students from attending classes), regardless of the fact that most students are frequently quite vocal in their opposition to such measures.fix|link=Wikipedia:Contents|text=citation needed

Alleged links with FARC

In June 2003 former Colombian ambassador in Mexico Luis Guzmán said that there were FARC offices on the UNAM Faculty of Philosophy and Literature and these offices were making propaganda and recruiting people to participate on the guerrilla [ [http://www.elsiglodetorreon.com.mx/noticia/39324.farc-opera-en-la-unam-embajador-de-colombia.html FARC opera en la UNAM: Embajador de Colombia - El Siglo de Torreón ] ] .

During the 2008 Andean diplomatic crisis of March 2008 with the incursion of the Colombian military into Ecuadorian territory resulted in the death of over 20 people and 16 other members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who were sleeping in a clandestine encampment, the Ecuadorian government confirmed the presence of several Mexicans 3 graduates and 1 student named Lucia Morret [ [http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN07630444 Rebel camp deaths spark questions in Mexico | Reuters ] ] all from the UNAM from the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature that were living on the FARC guerrilla facility [ [http://www.el-universal.com.mx/notas/488338.html Confirman alumnos de la UNAM identidad de desaparecidos - El Universal - México ] ] . The UNAM only confirmed the name of the graduates and later rejected any link between the university and the FARC [ [http://www.exonline.com.mx/diario/noticia/primera/pulsonacional/niega_unam_nexos_con_las_farc/150700 Niega UNAM nexos con las FARC - Excélsior ] ] .

In March 2008, Mexico city daily "El Excélsior" published an article [ [http://www.exonline.com.mx/diario/noticia/primera/pulsonacional/farc_y_epr_tienen_campus/150246 FARC y EPR tienen campus - Excélsior ] ] with information of the cubicle of the "Mexican Nucleus of support to the FARC" with a painted sign of the FARC on the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature and the presence of posters of FARC and EPR (Popular Revolutionary Army) guerrillas support on the walls of the faculty.
