The Australian Professional Footballers' Association (APFA) is an Australian trade union affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions that represents professional male, female and elite junior football (soccer) players.

History

The APFA is a relatively recent Australian trade union. Before the APFA, eight previous attempts had been made to form a footballer's association in Australia. The APFA was formed in April 1993 as the Australian Soccer Players’ Association.

In 1994 the APFA won a standardised contract for footballers, and through the Australian Industrial Relations Commission won the abolition of a transfer system much hated by Australian footballers.

Since the mid 1990s, the APFA has been active in advancing footballer's pay and conditions, and has also been active in protecting footballers from unfair dismissal.

On 1 July 1999 the organisation changed its name to the Australian Professional Footballers' Association.
