The Leica MP is a 35 mm film camera by Leica AG. It is an all-mechanical camera aimed at professionals, introduced in 2003. Indeed, its only concession to modern electronics is its lightmeter, which is battery-powered; but the camera can be used successfully without the onboard meter even if the battery fails.

Though it appears in chronology following the M6TTL and M7, the MP has many of the features of the much-earlier M3, even cosmetically: the curved film winding lever, the M3-type levers, knob-like rewinding button, etc. Contrasting with the M3, the Leica MP features an integrated lightmeter, entirely independent of the shutter system, and is available with viewfinders of magnifications 0.58, 0.72 and 0.85. The viewfinders are also especially luminous, making reduced-light focusing easier. The camera retains the quintessential 'bottom-loader' film loading style of the previous "M" models, as well as all-metal construction.

Used sales of the MP are not commonplace as it has attained an almost cult-like status among Leica aficionados and working professionals who appreciate the tank-like build and sublime handling characteristics of the MP body, which is available in black or silver model colors.

One measure of the passion evoked by this classic 'light-tight box' is the long-running thread at the L-Camera Forum (formerly Leica Camera User Forum) entitled [http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/film-forum/8842-i-love-my-mp.html I Love my MP]

The MP accepts all Leica bayonet-mount lenses (21 mm through 135 mm), giving it a backwards compatibility (from 1954) of unparalleled extent with the many second-hand Leica or other manufacturers' lenses in similar format. The camera also bears a hotshoe for flash photography.

Among its many charms is its typical Leica "M" size and quiet shutter release, contributing to its reputation as a "stealth camera" in close-quarters use. The body of the MP measures 138mm (width), 77mm (height), and 38mm (deep) and weighs in at a dense-feeling 585 grams.

As Leica offered in its original marketing campaign from 2003, the MP runs true to its promise of "A camera for a lifetime".
