Part of a series about Places in Nova Scotia

Pictou County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It was established in 1835. It had a population of 46,965 people in 2006, which represents a decline of 5.1 percent from 1991. [ [http://www.gov.ns.ca/chartfx62/communitycounts/profiles/profile.aspx?ptype=&gnum=cnt1212&gname=Pictou%20County&gnum2=cnt1212&gtype=Province&yearid=&yearid2=&acctype=&chartid=&mapid=&dcol=&gnew=2&gview=1&sub=demographics&tid= Community Counts] ] It is the sixth most populous county in Nova Scotia. The seat of government is in the Town of Pictou.

Pictou County includes the towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Pictou, Westville and Trenton. Indian reserves in Pictou County include Fisher's Grant, Pictou Landing and Merigomish Harbour.

The word "Pictou" is derived from the Mi'kmaq word "Piktook" meaning an explosion of gas. The area which eventually became Pictou County was a part of Halifax County from 1759 to 1835.

In February 2008, Pictou County Municipal Council enacted (by a vote of 7-6) a controversial policy to fly only government flags at its administrative building. The policy is believed by some, including some County councillors who voted against the measure, to be based in homophobia.
