Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is a regional medical center in Albany, Georgia.

Phoebe provides maternal care, neonatal intensive care, cardiovascular surgery, radiation oncology and mental health services.

Over 300 affiliated doctors and 3,400 professional staff form a partnership to deliver healing, education and prevention to the community.

The facility offers emergency treatment, medical-surgical care, cardiac surgery, a women's health center, obstetrics, pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, wound care, hospital based substance abuse care, and much more.

As a not-for-profit hospital, Phoebe is operated by a volunteer board drawn from the community it serves.

History

. It was Judge Francis F. Putney who made the dream a reality. In 1910, Judge Francis Flagg Putney donated $25,000 to the Ladies Hospital Aid Society of Albany to establish a hospital to serve the citizens of Southwest Georgia. Judge Putney’s endowment came with three made three provisions:

* That the hospital be named after his mother "Phebe" Putney.
* That the hospital serve all citizens of the community, regardless of race or ability to pay.
* That the hospital be a brick building in order to withstand the greatest threat to structures at the time - fire.

The grand opening was planned for Monday, July 31, 1911 and the ladies of the Hospital Aid Association conducted tours of the new hospital for the public.

The little hospital on the plains of Southern Georgia officially opened its doors to patients on August 1, 1911, beginning a tradition of healing and community service that would grow into one of America's great not-for-profit community medical centers.
